Hatred is undoubtedly controversial (if you have no idea what I’m talking about I will link the trailer at the end), but what is truly interesting is what on earth would drive this blood lusting main character to go on a “Genocide crusade”?! Unless someone’s just stole his delicious bacon, then it’s obviously something Psychological and deep routed. For the sake of the article both “in” game (anything virtual to do with the actual game and character) and “out” game (the developers and real world) will be talked about in those terms, because frankly, who doesn’t want to know exactly why someone would want to create such a crudely controversial game?!First off, their is nothing politically correct or greater moral point to Hatred as the developers have said they are not trying to “Mask it by any ‘higher values’ “, “Killing is evil, therefore we decided to make an evil game about killing”. They sound like the type of guys you want to go for a drink with, right?yeah Whilst we’re on the topic we may as well talk about “out” game and in particular the developers. So why would anyone want to create a game like this? One potential reason which is seen within a lot of forms of media is trying to portray an emotion or state of mind that you’re feeling to someone else.
May 29, 2015 Hatred: gaming's most contrived controversy. The world’s largest video game streaming platform, which allows players to share their screened experiences with a potential audience of over 50. The following is a list of video games that have been given the 'Adults Only' (AO) rating by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), a United States-based organization which rates the content of video games to determine its appropriateness for specific age groups.
Research by Bates suggests that media can do this through ‘believable agents’ or essentially, creating an illusion of real life, something that seems real causing the audience to feel empathy; in this case the hatred the main character is feeling. This whole process could in some eyes be labelled as Projection, essentially throwing unwanted feelings onto someone else. Many say Freud was crazy, but who are we to judge, ey?Another reason behind creating of the game could quite simply be riding the controversy to advertise the game (it may be all of the factors, who knows?). This would fall more under Social Psychology, but to highlight my point is the recent Charlie Hebdo tragic incident. After the killing even more controversial drawings about the deaths were created and sales have now reached 5 million, (well, from an internet article I read, but who can really trust the internet? So, don’t take my word on it!) Psychologically controversy is attractive (mm controversy), you like it, I like it, who doesn’t?
It makes people think and more importantly talk. It gets inside the heads of people and makes them feel; whether it’s disgust, anger or pleasure and once you’re done you’ll pass it on and so it becomes an endless chain until everyone knows about it, which is what happened quickly with this game. Ultimately, becoming as Cohen said a “Moral panic”.Now we’ve established why someone would want to create such a media alarming game, we can talk about the game it’s self and why the character would want to essentially go on a killing spree. Now, while this is a Psychology article, people will automatically be like throw this disorder at him, throw that illness at him; and while that is an easy to do and we will mention some, there is often more in depth answers to why people become that mindlessly violent. To introduce this nicely, in a book by, Martha Minow she says that hatred is fueled by memories and creates a vicious cycle, which is true some kind of event has to have happened or information been drilled into a person to cause such hatred. Maybe to the point of it becoming a schema or habitual thought process that occurs within a person.
The very lovely book that I just referenced (probably will some more!), suggests that hate crime of this level while dark and evil is actually not all that uncommon; he shares many aspects that cause many other “hate” crimes, because that’s what it is, that is why people commit genocide; as a result of hate. Mind you, to hate EVERY single person someone must of really pushed his belly button. Disclaimer: the developers have stated that they aren’t revealing his back story (well, maybe not yet) in an interview, but none-the-less, we are still looking at why someone would be in his position. One of the most common triggers for immense hatred is trauma at some point, mostly likely as a child. A quite distressing statistic that supports this is that 14% of men and 36% of women in US prison were abused as children, this is double the frequency of the general public. No, I’m not saying every genocidal psychopath was abused as a child, other traumas may have ensued, but it is a possibility and that’s what we’re looking at, possibilities.
Another possibility is that he was simply raised to hate the world or in part that violence is right, this can be seen due to domestic violence or just overly aggressive role models and caregivers. Now for the final and perhaps most interesting part that many will have been expecting, possible mental illnesses. Something that many people do not realize is that Psychopathy is actually defined as a mental illness, more specifically a Personality Disorder.
Childhood is one of the main precursors that contribute to Psychopathy which we have mentioned. Others include learning impairment such as dysfunction in the Amygdala which is responsible for emotional regulation, which the main character is clearly lacking. This links nicely into lack of empathy (the man just doesn’t care!), and also lack of morals which can be due to upbringing again; he may just not have been raised with any.
Surprisingly, genetics can also explain this, such as the MAO-A gene or the Psychopath gene, ironic, huh?I thought it was. (a scientist found he had this gene as well as the same brain structure as a Psychopath while researching into it!) As well as all those boring Biochemicals floating in his brain that may be imbalanced. To quite nicely conclude,.waits for the internet to applause. (I joke, kinda). Just because we don’t have a back story doesn’t mean that we can’t explore why the main character or anyone on a genocidal crusade would have such hatred.
I hope this article some what enlightens you and maybe you’ll look further into it; it’s quite interesting I have to say (not biased at all).Thank you and goodbye!
